Last night I played at a place called the South Shore Poker Club. It was my first time playing there and my first time playing for higher stakes. I'm used to playing for $40-$60 max per night. My regular game has a $20 buy-in. I played at the 1/2 NL $100 max table. I bought in for $60 and stayed afloat for a while, busted out and bought back in for $40 (the minimun buy-in). I left broke. Since I didn't end up going to Foxwoods a few weekends ago, I decided to make this my first try at higher stakes. I played for about 3 hours and it was a full table all night (10-11 players).
I haven't found anything like the SSPC in Boston yet. It was a big room, three tables, nice chips, and a dealer. It would be nice to find a place like this in Boston.
I'm not sure when I'll go back to the SSPC. I enjoyed playing but I'm not ready to play higher stakes with any frequency. It's important for me to stay at limits that won't break my bankroll and move up at a comfortable pace. They host $30 tournaments (with a good structure) so I'll probably play some of those, that would be a good way to get to know the players for a reasonable price. It was a good (and costly) learning experience.
